The best rooftop bars in New York

The Upstairs rooftop bar is a more classic New York affair. As part of the Kimberley hotel, the bar is a modern take on old-school glamour and the liberal sprinkling of fairy lights on the rooftop creates an intimate atmosphere and the decor encompasses clean lines and elegant furniture. Read More

Up on the roof, where the drinks — and Manhattan views — are fine

Heaven may be a little closer in New York these days, especially in Manhattan, where hotels’ rooftop bars and restaurants are among the best places to enjoy summer. A few are restricted to guests, such as those at the Surrey, the Trump SoHo and the Thompson LES, but there are plenty of newer roof decks that are open for those who want their own little piece of the sky. Countess LuAnn Unsure of Return to Real Housewives

Last week, Dina Manzo announced that she’s done being on The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Bethenny Frankel is leaving her options open, telling PEOPLE recently, “I don’t see myself going back to The Real Housewives the way the cast is now.” And now, Countess LuAnn de Lesseps says she is unsure about her future as a Housewife. Going Upstairs With Kimberly

Because they won’t let you bring steak tartare and booze up the Empire State (again). Lots of good things happen way up in the air, e.g., cumulus cloud formation, in-flight meals and hanging at the Kimberly Hotel’s new rooftop digs thirty floors above Midtown East. Upstairs is a 4,000-square-foot lounge with unimpeded views of Manhattan on all sides, bronze paneled walls, vintage theatrical lighting, and décor that’s less Nikki Beach (the hotel’s neighboring club) and more Charles Dickens with his feet on the table. Upstairs

String lights overhead and overstuffed leather chairs set the ambiance at Upstairs, the swank new bar on the 30th floor of The Kimberly. A retractable glass roof—don’t worry, it won’t impede your 360-degree view! Read More

The Upstairs @ The Kimberly Hotel:

We were excited to learn Kimberly Hotel has encased their rooftop with a retractable glass dome that’ll keep rooftop parties cozy even in the coldest winter months. Yep, heated wood floors, a fireplace, the whole bit. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to test it out since this joint opens to the public in April. What you will get right away is a 360-view of Midtown’s skyline that captures a breathtaking view of the Chrysler building and other notable rooftops in the neighborhood.Read More

Upstairs The Kimberly gets an upper-decker

Propelling a rooftop bar to popularity in Manhattan requires meticulously adhering to a proven multi-step process: 1) Find roof, 2) Open bar. For roof digs taking it to the next level anyways, check out Upstairs, finally open to the public today.

Serviced by a dedicated elevator built for the venue, finally-ready-for-the-public Up sports flourishes as stunning as its unimpeded views of the Chrysler, all spread across a main deck weatherized with a retractable glass ceiling; a bar- & fireplace-abetted open air corner patio with living green walls; an indoor game room complete with projector and luxe standing chess table; and a bathroom fully encased in walnut, making it like a classy Han Solo for pooping. Vacation in Style: Designers Team Up with Hotels

High profile designers are finding new creative outlets these days while retail is taking a hit. The trend: hotel uniforms, and they are HOT! WWD announced yesterday that New York designers The Blonds, a favorite amongst Hollywood pop stars such as Rihanna and Britney Spears, have created the wait staff uniforms for the Kimberly Hotel’s new chic bar “Upstairs”. David and Phillipe Blond, the dynamic duo behind the brand who also created looks for the Sex and the City 2 movie, were inspired by the “Gothic” and “over-the-top” look of the venue in their designs. The Blonds aren’t the only designers to tap into the hotel trend. Nanette Lepore is teaming up with the Thompson Hotel for cocktail dresses to be worn by the staff at three of the hotel group’s locations (including the Roosevelt Hotel in LA). With the unveiling of Armani’s hotel in Dubai and LVMH expanding into hotel management, one may be wondering: What’s next, Armani Prive for the hotel maids? As if it wasn’t hard enough to get jobs in these high-revenue hotel lounges and bars, the young service industry debutantes will surely be vying for positions where it is their duty to wear Nanette Lepore. A Blond Uniform

The Blonds’ design for Upstairs staff
New York City is known for its swanky rooftop bars and secret member’s-only clubs, and The Kimberly Hotel recently launched their venture into the chic party-going scene. The property just opened their new rooftop bar, titled none other than “Upstairs”. This 4,000 square foot bar will be open year-round with a retractable glass roof and heated wood floors to accommodate the seasons. Interior designer Sylvia Tosun undertook the renovation and outfitted the space in black Edwardian chairs, pewter leather banquettes and “Alice in Wonderland” style chess tables.

Not only will the furniture be stylish, but the wait staff will be just as fashionable. The hotel hired design duo David and Phillipe Blond whom are typically known for creating jewel-encrusted corsets for the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Rihanna, to design the wait staff uniforms. Read More

Hotels Serve Up Rooftop Bars

Back in February, when most New Yorkers were huddled indoors, Roberto Bellissimo set out to explore the city’s rooftop lounges, spending a week bar-hopping with colleagues. Throwing back $15 specialty cocktails and sampling the nighttime nibbles was legit work for a hotel chef checking out his competition.

“We weren’t going around stealing ideas,” insists Mr. Bellissimo, executive chef of the chic new Hotel Indigo in Chelsea. “But we did want to see what works and doesn’t work at these places.” … Read more

A New Rooftop Bar for All Seasons

Here, on this rainy February day, we’d like to take the road less traveled.

We’d like to point you in the direction of a rooftop. Before you run for your nearest rathskeller, let us say this: you need this. You need to gaze out upon the buildings. You need a little perspective.

Oh, and there’s a retractable roof… Read more

Take a Sneak Peek at Upstairs!

Though most rooftop bars in New York close up shop during the winter months, Upstairs at the Kimberly Hotel has gone the route of retractable glass ceilings and walls to keep the space open year-round. The 3,000-square-foot space, with a 360-degree view of Midtown, was designed by firm De-Spec and uses heated ipê wood floors to keep patrons toasty in winter months. Creative director Marko Kalfa said Victorian-inspired charred wood furniture by Moooi was chosen to create a darker, “neo-gothic” feel… Read More
